In this lovely space!

I am delighted to announce that I will be performing for Carolyn Deby/sirenscrossing Wednesday and Thursday 25th and 26th January. Part of her work is supported by a bursary stemming from a larger body of research and innovation, ‘Movement and Meaning’, initiated by Gill Clarke and Susan Benn of PAL. Carolyn is Artist in Residence at UCL Urban Laboratory.

Early in December 2011 Mark Carberry and I spent a day sort of in residence at the Brick Box in Tooting Broadway Market, performing improvisations and carrying out some experiments involving talking and drawing with other people in the cafe space. Amongst others, fine artist Ben Varney joined in the drawing, talking, watching and tea-drinking. This was a public sharing of our work building improvisations together and separately. We continue to meet and work, and are in conversation and what and where next. Maybe you can catch us again dancing opposite the butcher in Tooting Market before long.

Performance news
‘Tea Revives the World’ in four parts

'Tea Revives The World', shot by Martin Surzyn

Site-specific performances conceived and performed by Alexandra Baybutt and Ben Gwalchmai, with kind support of Greenwich Dance.

Location:

Public gardens by Cutty Sark pub, shoreline Crane Street and between these two sites

Dates & Time:

Three short pieces: 29th June (Crane Street, by the gates next to the Rowing Club), 30th June (from Crane Street to Public garden), 1st July (Public garden)
Longer piece: 2nd July Crane Street, through gates next to Rowing Club onto shoreline).
All parts begin at 7.00pm.

The Cutty Sark was a tea-clipper ship trading tea all over the globe. The history of Greenwich is interwoven with Britain’s history of trading tea – one of Britain’s biggest exports at one time.

Set against the riverside and the shifting Thames Shoreline, the performances involves movement, sculptural costume and water. The actions of everyday rituals, tea-picking and voyages of the body and trade are woven together to explore the unique history of Greenwich and our relationship to this past.

All performances are free to attend, just come, no need to book.

Movement coaching/direction for theatre upcoming work

I’m currently doing a spot of movement coaching for director Kezia Cole on new play by Sam Sedgman. Black White and Red is on at the Etcetera Theatre June 14th-19th.

“I wouldn’t say I was manipulating anything.”
“No, I suppose you probably wouldn’t.”

A simple interview for a London paper transforms into a battle of wills between writer and subject, as an unfolding crisis on the other side of the world draws out compromising truths about both of them. Inspired by real events, Black and White and Red explores the difference between the political and the personal, and how far we’ll go to do the right thing.

“Of course it matters: it matters because I say it does and when I speak you will damn well listen.”

I lent my movement coaching skills to this project in its early stages, and highly recommend attending: Man to Man by Manfred Karge, directed by Russell Lucas opens on July 19th until 24th at the Calder Bookshop in Waterloo. See Theatre Feast for more info on this incredible one-woman play.

I’m movement directing and coaching for Theatre Delicatessen/Frances Loy again, re-working A Doll’s House for Latitude Festival (July 14th-17th) with the brilliant cast.

First Person Theatre news

Nick and I presented ‘Waystation’ at the Rochelle School for the Transeuropa festival in conjunction with Arts4HumanRights. This headphone theatre piece for two people at a time concerns disappearance, cooperation and identity. ‘Waystation’ premiered at Area10 in Peckham and has been presented at The Supper Club, Brighton, The Bargehouse and the Bradford Playhouse. It was great to share this work again. If you haven’t already, do download our free podcast ‘Figurehead‘ for a park bench anywhere, anytime. New work is in development but I can’t tell you anymore about it quite yet…

Workshops and one to one news

- I facilitate Bartenieff Fundamentals, movement re-patterning and coaching sessions one-to-one. See the Facilitation page for more details. I’ve introduced Summer rates with discounts for students/new graduates. I’m currently working with the inimitable Sean Conway in preparation for his cycling around the world competition in February 2012.

- I’m planning a short series of movement workshops for musicians/singers at the moment. Keep checking for updates.
