LBMS for musicians

This online workshop is for musicians of all styles, genres, instruments, voices, including electronic musicians and levels of experience. It will introduce you to the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS) through approaching the topics of warm-up/cool down, performance, rehearsal and creative development.

LBMS is a comprehensive system used to understand and explore many aspects of human movement patterns. LBMS is unique as it identifies both the qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of movement, taking into account functional as well as expressive content. I teach it as a somatic practice (through the felt-sense of the body) with an emphasis on creative exploration and empowerment. Guest artist Maya Felixbrodt will facilitate a section of the workshop considering the role of touch and connection. Read more about Maya here.

I have been working with musicians of different kinds on their physicality and performance skills since 2009, and had experience of playing percussion and piano as a child and teenager, before getting caught up in contemporary dance training. I also contributed to the development of Ivan Mijačević’s extensive workshop on movement/sound relations for dance training, Terpsichorean Sonics.

What

This online workshop introduces tools and concepts from LBMS through somatic movement. I facilitate through guided movement and improvisation, observation and analysis, practical tasks and creative reflection. You will receive questions and materials to read in advance.

By the end of the workshop you should have a clearer sense of how LBMS can operate as a creative toolkit for a working life in music, supporting your existing practice.

Why

The body and movement are often implicit in working as a musician. This workshop aims to make them explicit to support you in making more of your physical capacity, expression and communication. Approaches to body, space and qualities of movement are intended to increase sensation and receptivity, relevant for working alone and with others. At the most fundamental level, the body is sound, and this vibrating cellular matter can be relished and cherished.
